The Great Read You Just
Can’t Afford Not to Afford—

Now Free in PDF and E-Book

What more can we say? For only nothing (that’s $0.00, £0.00, €0,00) you can own Edmund Persuader in PDF or e-book format. To get them, all you have to do is click on the links in the sidebar on the left. No strings attached. We don’t even ask for your email address. Go ahead, click one and see. The PDF, EPUB, or MOBI will start downloading to your computer.

Which file do you want? For reading on your computer, we recommend
the PDF. It has the maps, the diagram, the ornaments, and the beautiful typography that you’ll find in the paperback. PDFs are also readable on a huge number of e-readers, but we haven’t tested them and can’t guarantee the results.

The PDF Details: We now offer the PDF as a compressed (ZIP) file. Most computers can open this automatically; you’ll need third-party software if you are using Windows 95/98/2000 or Mac OS X prior to version 10.3. Download it as you would any file, find it on your hard drive, and double-click on the file to force it to convert from ZIP to PDF format. (You can also use right-click or control-click to get a contextual menu. Then select “Open.”) On a slow connection, the zipped PDF will take a bit of time to download (it’s 5.9 MB). Why did we make this a little more complicated by zipping the file? Because most browsers just open a plain PDF file without saving it to your hard drive, and a lot of people didn’t realize that they were really reading it on the website. They kept coming back to the site and repeatedly loading the file. Besides, if you save the file to your own computer, you can read it in a real PDF reader such as Adobe Acrobat Reader, which will give you better image quality than a browser. We recommend you view the PDF in 2-up view (a spread of two pages) to simulate the effect of reading the book. To view the maps, switch back to single-page view and rotate the view clockwise. Some pages in the PDF version are blank placeholders, like the blank pages you’ll find in a real book. Don’t panic when you’re confronted with one—just go on to the next page.

The EPUB (1.3 MB) can be read on the following, if you have (free) e-reader software installed: Apple’s iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad; Barnes and Noble Nook; Sony Reader; BeBook; Bookeen Cybook Gen3; Kobo eReader; COOL-ER; the Adobe Digital Editions app; Lexcycle Stanza; BookGlutton; AZARDI; FBReader; Aldiko; WordPlayer on Android; Freda on Windows Mobile and Windows Phone 7; and a Mozilla Firefox add-on, EPUBReader. Etc.

The MOBI (3.2 MB) can be read on the Amazon Kindle and most Windows, Symbian, BlackBerry, and Palm devices. Other apps such as Kindle, WINE, Okular, FBReader will allow you to read the MOBI on a computer; but again, why would you want to, when you can read the PDF in all its splendor? With the free Kindle reader app you can read the MOBI on your PC, Mac, iPhone, iPad, Blackberry, Android phone, or Windows 7 phone.

The EPUB and MOBI details: To read these files, you’ll have to know how to get the e-book from the receiving device to the reading device. For example, if you download a MOBI on your home computer, you’ll have to use a USB cable to get it onto your Kindle. But we’ll leave that up to you. Furthermore, it may help to open the file from within whatever app you’re using to read the file. (If you just click on it to open it, your system may not know which software it’s supposed to be using.) No guarantees it will work—we’re supplying the free file, so it’s up to you to make the reading happen.

And
after you’ve read the PDF or the e-book, come back and buy the paperback. It’s still in the first edition, it has all the beauty of a physical book, and we’ll even get it signed for you if you request we do so. (For details on signed books, see our FAQ on that.)

Still suspicious? Wondering why we’re giving this book away free? There are two reasons:

  1. First, as a public service. We want you to have it, no matter what happens. What’s the purpose of a book if people don’t enjoy it? (You can read more about our philosophy here.)
  2. Second, we think you’ll come back and buy a paperback copy. There’s no obligation to do that, and we know a lot of people won’t. But you will, and enough others too, so that we’ll be able to keep on publishing great stories at Mermaid Press.
So go for it. Get the free version. Or if you’re resigned to the inevitable, zoom right to the paperback.
